At the turn of the century (into the 1900s), the town of Colonial Beach was a summer retreat for residents of Washington, DC (only 65 miles away), earning it the nickname Playground of the Potomac.

With Memorial Day & summer days headed our way, we are looking for ways to stay cool! When traveling with kids, we usually can’t take a day trip that requires 2 or more hours in the car without a lot of pit stops. Luckily, Virginia has a bunch of lakes & rivers that are much faster to get to than driving to the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

There is no need to fly thousands of miles away to the Caribbean to bask in the sun on a beautiful beach.

Did you know there are nearly 200 giant LOVE signs all across Virginia? These LOVE artworks, called LOVEworks, are found in all corners of the state, representing their unique communities while celebrating the iconic Virginia is for Lovers® brand.

Days 1 and 2: Washington, D.C., to Reedville and Tangier Island, Virginia (121 miles)Roughly halfway to Reedville from D.C., break for lunch at Colonial Beach, a pleasant small town with a 2 1/2-mile-long sandy beach on the Potomac (it’s somewhere between 90 minutes and two hours south of the city, depending on traffic).

Virginia is blessed with an abundance of beaches. However, there are some that are always more crowded than others. Virginia Beach, for example, offers beautiful shorelines yet you likely won’t be alone there.

Town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, has partnered with Virginia Tourism Corporation to inspire roadtrip travel throughout Virginia this summer and fall. Throughout the campaign, the Town’s official travel and tourism agency.

At the top of the list is one of the oldest beaches but still uncrowded beaches in the nation. It’s just 90 minutes or so from Washington, DC or Richmond, VA, and located on the Chesapeake Bay in the heart of Colonial Beach, Virginia sharing the name with the beach itself.

Reader’s Digest has named the Town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, the Nicest Place in Virginia, making the Potomac River town a finalist in the publication’s Nicest Places in America 2019. Reader’s Digest chose Colonial Beach after receiving nominations from two area residents.
